Overseeding
Overseeding introduces fresh grass seed into an existing lawn to improve coverage, density and appearance.
New seed is spread across the lawn, or into specific thin and damaged areas, to fill gaps and thicken the existing turf.
Overseeding works best when the lawn is prepared first, for example by scarifying, so the seed makes good contact with the soil.

What it involves
New grass seed is spread over the existing lawn to thicken it and fill thin or bare patches. Seed needs good contact with the soil, so the surface is usually prepared first, for example by scarifying.
Best time of year
Late summer to early autumn is ideal, while the soil is still warm and rain is more reliable. Spring also works once the soil has warmed.
What to expect afterwards
Germination takes from one to a few weeks depending on the seed and the weather. Keep the area watered in dry spells and avoid heavy use until the new grass has established and been cut a few times.
